New Specialists and Pediatric Hospitalist Physicians in San Francisco

San Francisco, February 2, 2011 -- Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation announced today the addition of three new specialty care physicians and three new pediatric hospitalists to its roster of physicians available in San Francisco. Specialists include neurologist Amy Akers, M.D., gastroenterologist Mimi Lin, M.D., and psychiatrist Prapti Mehta, M.D. The three new hospitalists, who are independent contractors providing inpatient care, include pediatrician Jon-Michael Castelli, M.D., pediatric cardiologist Ellen Chan, M.D., and pediatrician Hsingming John Liou, M.D. These physicians join the Foundation’s current membership of more than 130 primary and specialty care providers in San Francisco.
Amy Akers, MD, is a board-certified neurologist with subspecialty certification in clinical neurophysiology. Dr. Akers holds an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. She completed an internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, followed by a neurology residency at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she received the American Academy of Neurology Resident Award in Clinical Ethics. Dr. Akers also completed fellowships in neurophysiology and neuromuscular disorders at Stanford University Medical Center and California Pacific Medical Center. Her professional experience and interests include: general neurology including neuromuscular disorders, headache, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, memory disorders, movement disorders, and peripheral nerve disorders; and electromyography/nerve conduction studies. Mimi Lin, MD, is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. Dr. Lin received her M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University (Bronx, New York). She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at California Pacific Medical Center, where she also finished a gastroenterology fellowship. At CPMC, she received the Department of Internal Medicine’s Distinguished Teacher Award and, as an undergraduate student at University of California at Berkeley, she received the I.L. Chaikoff Award for Achievement and Excellence in molecular biology. Dr. Lin’s professional interests include gastrointestinal motility and esophageal diseases. She is passionate about patient education and health care advocacy, and she has traveled to Capitol Hill to advocate for congressional support of the Colorectal Cancer Early Detection, Prevention and Treatment Act. Prapti Mehta, MD, board-certified in psychiatry, serves as the medical director of the Women’s Mental Health and Wellness Program at California Pacific Medical Center where she specializes in treating psychiatric illness during and after pregnancy. She also provides general adult psychiatric treatment. Dr. Mehta received her M.D. from University of Alabama School of Medicine. She completed an internship and psychiatry residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell Campus. She also undertook a fellowship at New York Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Mehta’s professional interests include: psychiatric evaluation and treatment for men and women; mental health conditions including anxiety, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and bipolar disorder; women’s mental health including peripartum and postpartum psychiatric conditions; psychopharmacology; and psychodynamic psychotherapy. John-Michael Castelli, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician providing inpatient care at California Pacific Medical Center and St. Luke’s Campus. Dr. Castelli earned an M.D. from Ohio State University College of Medicine (Columbus), also serving as a counselor at Camp Ronald McDonald for children with cancer (2001-2007), where he was honored with a leadership award. He completed an internship and residency at Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Dr. Castelli joins Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation as an independent contractor. Ellen Chan, MD, board-certified in pediatric cardiology and pediatrics, joins the Foundation as an independent contractor hospitalist providing cardiac care to pediatric patients at California Pacific Medical Center. Dr. Chan received an M.D. from University of Nebraska College of Medicine (Omaha). She completed an internship and residency at Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University Pediatric Residency Program. Dr. Chan also completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and an advanced pediatric cardiology fellowship in imaging at Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Hsingming John Liou, MD, is board-certified in pediatrics and treats pediatric inpatients at California Pacific Medical Center and St. Luke’s Campus. Dr. Liou holds an M.D. from Medical College of Georgia (Augusta) and completed an internship and residency at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (Orange, California).
