Philosophy of Care
I first trained in internal medicine, and afterwards, did a fellowship in nephrology to become a kidney specialist. I practiced both internal medicine and nephrology for five and a half years. With this experience, I witnessed on a daily basis the devastation that could result from a lack of adequate preventative care. I became well aware that many patients did not need to end up with advanced kidney disease, if these underlying conditions were aggressively treated earlier in life. Also, the growing epidemic of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases helped me understand the vital role of preventative care, especially as it relates to common chronic diseases and conditions like obesity, diabetes and hypertension. As a result, I decided to focus more on preventative care, to help my patients minimize their risk of developing serious and life-threatening health problems.
I like to get to know the patient as a whole. The relationship with my patient plays a critical role in understanding his/her health concerns, developing good communication and working effectively as a partner in his/her health care. Therefore, I hope to develop a relationship with each of my patients over time, in order to accommodate each person's needs specifically. I do not believe in the paternalistic style of medicine. Rather, healthcare should be a collaborative effort between the patient and the physician. I wish also to share effectively my knowledge with the patients, help shape their understanding of their conditions from an evidence-based approach, and dispel any misconceptions that they might hold.
